The underpass located at a very busy square in the central of Al-Lathqiyah downtown. The project contained: Underpass and retaining walls, see fig. (113). The underpass was a monolithic rigid frame bridge, with haunches, 16.5 m clear span, and total length (351.6 m). The retaining walls were 4 sets of 7 different heights, cantilevered and cast-in-place. See Appendix for more pictures.
My Role in the Project (in Detail):
1) I performed the analysis utilizing FE package STAAD III, 2 models were accomplished. These were: space frame grillage and 3d shell element which used to get the right reinforcement layouts especially in vicinity of the ventilation openings.
2) I designed all the underpass sections manually according to the envelope diagrams of the internal moments and shear. These envelope diagrams were achieved due to combination of 10 different load cases. No dynamic analysis was required for the underpass and that according to the structure type and the seismic zone. However, special details in the dimensions and reinforcement were taken into account. AASHTO was the guide, see figure (114).
3) I analyzed and designed the retaining walls manually (hand calculations), and I included the earthquake hazards according to (Mononobe theory), see figures (115, 116 and 117).
4) I drew all the structural drawings of this project. Syrian Code and ACI-315R were the guides.
The structures were constructed in the same year. I conducted two site visits (as it was requested by the constructor) to change the ties shape and to verify the details that connect the underpass with the retaining walls. The structures are under service now, see figure (118).
